Facial spider veins can be unsightly and are often concealed with heavy makeup. They are harmless and regarded as a cosmetic concern. The medical term for facial spider veins is telangiectasia – which means widened tiny blood vessels that cause threadlike red lines or patterns close to your skin surface.
What are Spider veins? They are like varicose veins but a lot smaller. Valves inside the tiny veins are not working properly allowing blood to back flow, pool or burst the vessel, which becomes visible under your skin. They are, as the name suggests often in the shape of a ‘spider web pattern’. They are close to the surface of the skin and tend to be very visible – red or purple in colour.
Facial flushing can also be caused by small spider veins that are not visible to the naked eye. Flushing gives the appearance of redness most often seen on the cheeks, nose, neck and chest areas. This is a treatable condition, click here to learn more.
What can cause spider veins?
- Sun damage
- Genetics
- Rubbing your face too hard
- Smoking
- Alcohol
- Free radicals
- Rosacea
- Hormonal changes
- Lifestyle
- Aging
Why treat them? They are mostly just a cosmetic concern but are very treatable. Patients report wanting them treated because they find them embarrassing, want to reduce redness or want to be able to wear no makeup.
Are they are treatable? Yes. Our registered nurses use Excel V – from Cutera to effectively remove facial spider veins in 1 – 3 treatments, one month apart. Excel V is the most advanced aesthetic technology that combines two lasers which work together to target spider veins and diffuse redness. Our nurses will remove, reduce and soften facial spider veins. The Excel V unlike other laser and IPL machines has been developed to treat many vascular conditions – like spider veins. The Excel V has a deeper wave length and therefore can treat light to darker skin tones.
Why choose Specialist Aesthetics medical grade laser treatment?
- It is non invasive treatment
- Requires no time off work
- Is gentle enough that makeup can be applied immediately after.
- Treats men or woman
- Can treat all skin tones because of it’s deeper wavelength
We apply and recommend Coola broad spectrum SPF to be worn for 2 weeks after treatment.
How does our laser work? Our laser delivers pulses of light energy which cause the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel which is then reabsorbed by your body. Blood flow will naturally be redirected to other deeper veins below the skin surface, where they should be. Our Excel V heats the targeted spider vein, which then becomes eliminated, faded or reduced, with one or multiple treatments.
Is treatment painful? Most patients feel a rubber band snapping sensation against the skin as the pulses of energy are delivered through the hand-piece by the Nurse. The Excel V Laser has a cooling tip which the Nurse will use to protect and soothe the treated areas so you feel no discomfort and have an improved treatment experience.
What time of the year can I treat my facial spider veins? Ideally laser treatment for facial spider veins is not done in the height of Summer. This is because your skin can become sensitive to strong sunlight after laser treatment. However if you do decide to treat during this season always wear a SPF and a sun hat when you go outdoors for 2 weeks post treatment.
