Compression Stockings & Travel Socks

WHAT ARE COMPRESSION STOCKINGS OR SOCKS?

They are a specially made weave, snug elastic hosiery – which gently squeezes your leg.

Why wear compression stockings or sock?

Compression socks (or stockings) are designed to make veins drain faster and more efficiently.  They do this by compressing the calve muscle – therefore pushing blood back up to the heart.

When should you wear Compression?

  • Tired, aching, throbbing legs
  • Long haul travel
  • Exercising – during and post
  • Varicose eczema
  • Post-surgery
  • Pregnancy
  • Following varicose vein treatment
  • Phlebitis (inflammation in the skin)
  • Ulcers
  • DVT
  • Just for comfort at work

Compression socks / stockings can help prevent the following:

  • Pooling of blood in your lower limbs
  • Dull aching, throbbing or itching at the end of a day
  • Decrease swelling
  • Changes in skin colour and texture
  • Prevent blood clots forming in your lower limbs – which could travel towards your heart and become life threatening.

Types of compression:

There are different types of what is called gradient or graduated compression – grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3. Each grade indicates how much compression the stockings have. Grade 1 is the least and 3 the most.

You will be prescribed the appropriate grade by our specially trained stocking consultant or one of our vascular nurses depending on the reason for wearing them.
